As Christians we have a deep meaning and reason to celebrate Easter because it is a time in which we remember and celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Of course as Christians we celebrate and remember the resurrection of our Savior everyday, but Easter is set apart as a special time to honor and glorify God for what He has done for us. We also celebrate and worship every Sunday because it is the first day of the week, the day women in the Bible discovered that Jesus resurrected.

Matthew 28:1-10 tells us what happened.

Why do we Celebrate Easter?

The death and resurrection of Jesus is a key foundation of our faith. His resurrection is the doorway through which we are able to enter into heaven and have eternal life.

We celebrate because Jesus gave His life for us. No one took it from Him, but He freely chose to give it as a sacrifice.

Matthew 20:28 says

even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many

He came to earth with the very purpose of giving His life so that we might have life.

He knew what He would suffer, as we can see when He predicts His own suffering in speaking with His disciples in Matthew 16:21

However He still chose to go through with it for us. Though it was painful, though it was not easy, He chose to obey God even unto death and give His life for our salvation.

In Matthew 26:36-46 We see how He prays to God in the Garden of Gethsemane and chooses the Father’s will over His own comfort.

Why Did Jesus Sacrifice Himself?

He did it for love. Because He loves us.

Romans 6:23 says

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus sacrificed Himself to break us free from the power of sin and death so that we might receive the amazing gift of eternal life.

When we lived in darkness apart from God we were slaves to sin, but Jesus gave us life and freedom.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 says

55 “O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Death no longer has victory over us. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross gives us life and freedom that we can find nowhere else.

Jesus is the Only Way

John 14:6 says

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life because He is the only one who has overcome death. He is the only one who can overcome death for us. Only by Him can we come into heaven. By His wounds, by His sacrifice, we are healed. This is the source of our joy and peace. The blood of Jesus is the power that saves our souls and heals our hearts. Apart from Him we can never experience the fullness of joy that He gives because apart from Him we are trapped in the shadow of death.

This is God’s love toward us, that He died to save us.

John 3:16-18

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Therefore He is worthy of the glory, worthy of our devotion. Joyful and thankful for the gift of His grace and love, we celebrate. Yes, we celebrate.

There is no other like Him. Come and wash yourself in the blood of Jesus. Repent of your sins and devote your life to Him today.
